Guest Relations ~ FAQ

Naparima Bowl is located at No. 19-21 Paradise Pasture, San Fernando, Trinidad, W.I. adjacent to the San Fernando General Hospital and south of the main city centre district. The existing site consists of 1.344 hectares with appropriate dimensions of 165.3m in the east-west direction and an average of 75m in the north south direction with a northern neck forming the entrance access off Lady Hailes Avenue. Approximately half of the site is relatively flat with the western side rising sharply into the hill. The auditorium and outdoor amphitheatre are built into the hill on this side, hence the nomenclature of the Bowl.

The open areas on the site are pleasantly planted with several mature trees which offer shade for the parking areas. There are three paved vehicular driveways. All the driveways can be resurfaced if retained in the major redevelopment to come.
For safety and as a courtesy to other ticket holders, please do not sit or stand in the aisles. Aisles should be kept clear at all times. We ask that you comply with these policies. Any patron not in compliance is subject to ejection.

History of Naparima Bowl
In 1948, San Fernando and Port-of-Spain co-ordinated to host the first national Music Festival, which was held at the Borough House on St. Vincent Street. It was then that the need for a cultural centre in the South became a priority.
During the 1950s, prominent cultural activist, Mr. Robert Montano along with Ms. Grace Abdool and others petitioned the Government to build a concert hall. They were granted a parcel of land at Paradise Pasture, known as the "Tray", an old building called the Drill Hall, and $138,000 for construction of the concert hall. The hall was officially opened on August 27th 1962, three years after the sod was turned, at a final cost of $450,000.00. Mr. Montano would become the first Chairman, and Ms. Abdool the first Manager.

The Bowl proved to be a popular venue and the schedule was always full, with year-round activities ranging from comedy shows and school plays to Kiddies Carnival and calypso tents. Many local acts had their beginnings at Naparima Bowl and still frequent the hall today.

Fifteen years later, the Bowl was ravaged by an electrical fire which completely destroyed the auditorium . For nine years all efforts to reconstruct the Bowl went unrewarded until 1988, when A.N.R Robinson agreed to restore the Bowl to a tune of $10,000,000.00. On March 23rd 1988, The Honourable A.N.R Robinson laid a column to mark the start of the works. The renovated Bowl re-opened to the public on October 20th 1990, during a gala opening ceremony. The renovations included air-conditioning, a fire-proof curtain, and computerized lighting and sound systems. A concrete sculpture was also erected in the courtyard as a gift from Dr. Ralph Baney, himself from San Fernando.

In May of 2005, more disaster struck, this time by flooding, after heavy rainfall leaked through the roof, damaging a large portion of the hall. Temporary renovations were made to the stage in order to accommodate concerts during the CARIFESTA IX celebrations. It was a little over two years before the Bowl was reopened. The cultural climate suffered greatly during this time, and some even expressed that it came to a standstill.  The restoration brought back the ambiance of the nineteen ninties along with the integration of today's technology.Today the Bowl is still up and running, and will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary on August 27th, 2012. May it continue to be a source of pride as it nurtures and promotes the talents and hopes of the next generation.
